I love this bracelet so much. It is the Number of Breaths Bracelet from BB Becker. Becker is actually an inspiration himself — it was while attending a school in New York City meant for disadvantaged young people that his love of art began. His love for clean, classic lines and organic materials began during a course in sculpture.

And now, today, we have this gorgeous bracelet — among other pieces, of course, but this is unquestionably my favorite. It is thirteen millimeters wide and made of a sleek, stunning sterling silver. As you can see, the shape is innovative and unique. The quote engraved on the bracelet reads, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away. — Unknown.”

Truly an inspiration.

And then you have the jewelry of Sara Blaine, who actually started designing jewelry because — gasp! — she thought it would be fun, specifically to create pieces which reflected her own one of a kind aesthetic and style. So, back in 1999, she and Mendel, her husband, created Sara Blaine Jewelry.

You can see in her pieces that she still has fun designing. Just take a look at the eclectic but elegant Black and White Mother of Pearl Bracelet, with sterling silver and signature Keong disks.

In the world of jewelry, we currently have the most innovative designers who have ever created a ring, put together a necklace, or thought of a new kind of bracelet. We have jewelry designers akin to Alexander McQueen and edgy, out of the box fashion designers of his ilk. It is getting harder and harder to remain edgy in this industry. It seems like everything has been done already — several times, in most cases. And then you have Pat Flynn, a self admitted goldsmith, the designer behind Pat Flynn Inc. You have Pat, and designs like this one:

Can you tell what that is? If you’re like me, you have been sitting there and squinting at it for a while now, trying to figure out if you’re seeing what you really think you’re seeing. Don’t worry, you are. There is nothing wrong with your eyesight, your glasses, or your monitor. That is a nail. More to the point, that is a bracelet made out of a nail. Welcome to the wonderful, innovative world of Pat Flynn.

It is called the Top Half Sprinkle and it features one-third carat diamonds, eighteen carat gold, iron, and platinum.

Very rarely can you find a piece of jewelry which is both stunning and meaningful. Most designer jewelry is undoubtedly gorgeous, and certainly many pieces have special meaning for the people who wear them. However, finding designer jewelry that has meaning all in its own can be especially difficult in our decidedly trend driven society.

John Hardy has taken care of that, however. Since its inception, his Naga collection has been hugely popular, not just because it is stunningly beautiful, but also because the collection itself clearly tells a story, as well it should.

As the very word “Naga” would imply, many pieces in this collection — like the one pictured above — feature drags. This is because, in several language, “Naga” translates into dragon, snake, serpent — you get the idea. These animals and species are sacred in many cultures. The snake in particular is evocative of rebirth: the snake, after all, regularly sheds its skin, yet at its heart it is always the same, it always holds onto itself.

Thus, in a way, wearing a piece of John Hardy’s jewelry — such as the Napa Dragon Bracelet — will give you the sense of always being who you are, no matter what may change in your life.
